In 1956 th e B oard of D irectors of the A m erican In d u stria l
H ygiene A ssociation ap p o in ted an ad hoc C om m ittee o n C ertifi­
cation in th e F ield of In d u strial Hygiene. U n d e r th e c h a irm a n ­
ship of Lewis J. Cralley, Ph.D., this C om m ittee re p o rte d to the
B oard on O cto b er 10, 1957, recom m ending th at the A ssociation
endorse and in itia te the establishm ent of a voluntary certification
program for q u alified industrial hygienists.
In N ovem ber 1957 the B oard of Directors ap p o in ted a n ad hoc
Com m ittee on C ertification Standards, u n d er the ch airm an sh ip
of H enry F. Sm yth, Jr., Ph.D. In February 1958 this C om m ittee
recom m ended to th e Executive Com m ittee of the A ssociation th at
the A m erican C onference of G overnm ental In d u stria l H ygienists
should be in v ited to jo in w ith the Association in in itia tin g a certi­
fication program , a n d should be invited to delegate six m em bers
to jo in w ith th e ad hoc C om m ittee in planning. E arly in 1958
these A C G IH delegates were nam ed, and the resulting J o in t C om ­
m ittee on C ertification Standards w ith th irteen m em bers h eld its
first m eeting in A p ril 1958, u n d er the chairm anship of H e n ry F.
Smyth, Jr., Ph.D.
In M arch 1959 th e J o in t Com m ittee recom m ended to the two
Associations th a t voluntary certification should be co n d u c te d by
an in d ep en d en t in corporated Board, th at the two Associations
should sponsor the B oard a n d advance m onies for its in itia l ex­
penses, th at th e J o in t C om m ittee should be discharged, a n d th at
each Association should delegate six of its m em bers to jo in in
organizing the in d ep en d e n t Board. D uring the sum m er of 1959
the m em berships of th e two Associations approved th e prin cip le
of voluntary certification, the outline of plans and proposed q u a li­
fications for certification w hich had been prepared by th e Jo in t
C om m ittee, a n d th e advance of money for in itial expenses. Each
organization th ere u p o n delegated six of its m em bers to jo in in
organizing the Board.
T h e twelve delegates held their initial m eeting in R ochester,
New York on A p ril 24, 1960. A petition for a ch arter as a n o n ­
profit co rp oration u n d e r the laws of the C om m onw ealth of P en n ­
sylvania was ap p ro v ed by the C ourt of Com m on Pleas of A lle­
gheny C ounty Septem ber 12, 1960, and certified by th e P rothonotary of th at C o unty Septem ber 26, 1960. T h e A m erican B oard of
In d ustrial H ygiene held its first annual m eeting in P ittsb u rg h on
O ctober 28, 1960.
All persons certified by the Am erican B oard of In d u stria l
Hygiene becom e m em bers of the A m erican Academ y of In d u s­
trial Hygiene. T h e y rem ain m embers in good stan d in g so lo n g as
they pay the an n u a l dues assessed by the Board. T h o se w ho have
retired from professional activity will rem ain m em bers in good
standing w ith o u t th e paym ent of annual dues.
